The Institute of Chinese Medicine in London’s Covent Garden is one of the foremost practitioners in the UK, combining traditional Chinese techniques with Western medical practice. The brief for this project was to open up the ground floor area to provide a reception area for clients as well as to create visibility from the street for the dispensing and preparation area. We designed a streamlined built-in seating unit that is combined with the reception desk. The materials are very simple: European Oak, white paint and glass. Inside the main entrance, a free-standing glass panel is etched with a piece of classic Chinese poetry on healing, and serves to deflect the circulation as you walk into the space.
